History of Founder A. Byron Smith
At the age of eight as a paperboy, A. Byron Smith’s goal was to be a successful businessman. He received his education from the Danville City Public Schools, University of Virginia, Roanoke College, and Real Estate Continuing Education Courses. He notably served his country (1941-1945) as United States Army Platoon leader seeing combat in France, Italy, and Germany. He later founded A. Byron Smith Oil Company in 1954. During the civil rights era, Smith joined Roanoke’s “Bi-Racial Committee” who worked to desegregate Roanoke businesses in a nonviolent manner in 1960.
A. Byron Smith credits his grandparents with having the greatest influence on him. His grandfather, a slave, graduated from Hampton University and became a reverend minister; and his grandmother, a renowned beautician.
Shmura Glenn, his daughter, returned home to Roanoke in 2007 to run the family business. She says got her work ethic from her dad. He would deliver oil to customers at all hours of the night to keep them from being cold. Shmura received her education from Franklin College, Indiana University, and Perdue University (BA, Economics).
